Drawing a Bead on It

Earthly delights come kindled by desire!
I said, and some retorted: Keen to see!
What most on earth indeed inflames the fire
Is paradisal sham credulity.

To the worst up-front hokum I then uttered
Some, leniently, responded right on cue.
The wheedling even waived my scruples muttered
Bare truth compared to eyes that pertly blue!

Still ogling at the trinkets, my desire
Had all too soon a ball because of those;
In view of more, one must by force admire
The pertinence of conscionable pose.

If I deemed some were hot instead of plain
No blarney nor consent could have us rise –
For all our lust, on earth we would remain
And not be shown into some paradise.
