Self Knowledge

There was a nifty pleasure wench
Wide sprawling on a public bench;
The sun shone warm, the day was bright––
She would not work today 'til night!

Soon came some dapper would-be pimp;
The wench perceived him and went limp.
The sun shone warm, she'd work for free,
That straggling bum was destiny!

"Come, sweetie, see me, ain't no shirk;
Whenever pummeled, I shall work!"
That imp ignored her, such an irk,
Went slouching somebench else, poor jerk.

"You dopey swell, ain't but a wench –
Why then not slouch on one same bench?"
––"The day's so bright, and life's so short,
Don't think that matches should consort."

The wench: "So stew in your own slop!"
–– "Our wishes dovetail…" thought the fop.
The sun shone less, a cloud urged by,
The boy cast up his shadowed eye.

Record Wallah

Since he seems to consider his entire lifetime a season
Fierce enough to best hole up in a poet's cranny
--What has this soldier to report back to us?

These whirlwinds in teacups
These misdialed calls: Are they of
Any interest to a world in actual turmoil?

If there is always some twister churning outside
We surely do expect him to report
About its eye.

And there he is, that nestled bastard
Exactly where he ought to be, laid-back
While observing a model tempest in a pot.

Once funneled into a poet's cranny
No squall ever managed to blur
The eye of a record wallah.

He would coax us afield
Into heeding his aftcast whereas
Inenarrable weather fronts toss us about.

The Worm and the Vet

here was once a blind worm who had made his way to a veteran veterinarian's surgery, but only to lament that he had come upon this earth devoid of legs. Hence, quoth he, he felt severely challenged.
The old and sapient veterinarian replied that all serpents on this earth have to go without legs. Thereupon the blind worm warned him that he had learned the bitter truth: "What may be fair to a snake", he uttered, "can hardly appertain to a natural lizard!" For he had read in a good writ that indeed he was a natural lizard.

The old and sapient veterinarian answered: "But who was the madman who gave thee that scripture, oh thou blind worm? And why canst thou read, anyway? What bothereth thee? Artn't thou yet as swift as any other limbless wriggler here below?"
"'Tis the principle that bothereth me!" the slow worm retorted. "Such lack of justice ruffleth me to an extent that I even forgot how to writhe to and fro. Thou canst not imagine, old and sapient veterinarian, the pain and labour it cost me to simply twist hither!"

The old and sapient veterinarian had an old and silly cat, and once of a sudden that rutting cat caterwawled behind the ancient surgery's brittle wooden door. And more quickly as he had come who knoweth whence, the blind worm legt it and flew who knoweth whither. However, what booteth it to know neither whence nor whither, since only the sidle counteth...

This end cannot be regarded but as a most unsatisfactory one. It may have suited the old and weary veterinarian, who forthwith was rid of an all too astute outpatient's tiresome questioning; it is nevertheless quite a kick in the teeth of us other caecilians struggling in despair to understand our lot in life.

From Different Axes

Have I an ax to grind?
I am comfortable with my blunt life.
It is hurtful enough when seen from a bit afar.
And why should anyone behold it from too close up?

Weird enough: the edgy ones
Are lives where people seem to have
Even far blunter axes to grind. This one thing
Stumps even me who may see it from quite far away.

Anliegen der Dichtung

I

A rien. Ou à rester moderne, peut-être ?

II

Sauternes

Such grape, if ſtill dependent, vine-hung grape
But nevermore in cluſtered heaps abundant
Juſt here & there, uniquely loſt, redundant
Such overlooked, ſuſpended, grape eſcape

Such widow grapes, grape’s relics, dangling meekness
Turn ſweeteſt ſince a firſt froſt chilled the air
So grew not until withered birdiſh fare
The time thoſe birds drive reeling through the bleakness.

Yet in the thicket’s unobſtructed view
No light appropriated what they’d own
But miſt that ſnugs now by the ancient ſtone
Has veiled them off with his own raiſin hue.

& if their ſummer’s drought has ſoaken them
Fall’s damp will henceforth parch & famiſh them.

Demut, Ressemblance

Is picking plums a plum job?
Snatching those things and then
Pop 'em in the mouth is a plum job.
Writing this is not a plum job.
Reviewing it might be one.

The front office oozes with plum jobs and dough
The back office offers but toil and even so
Makes no chore but a graft in most cases.

Pop in the plums and shut your mouth after it;
You'll have plump cheeks but
You're still created in god's own image, as the
Bible says, and Reb Chaim comments on it:
It's just you don't look like god
––The utter plum as well as the utter plumber––
You've only fallen plum into the same set-up, man.

When you say that you feel like a dumbass
You don't have neither that dumb ass's ears
Nor its actual grayness––you're
Stuck plum in its dumb situation, that's all.

Out of that given situation
You've got to create something
You don't even know if it will turn out
A dumb or a plum thing something, but anyways:
You'll never be the merry sponger who reviews it.
This one isn't even made in your own image.

Vieillesse

His face had bowed to return wild & free
His eyes' regard poured down, the shaggy brow
Inclined to spurt its weed into that flow
Whose waters it now stroked incessantly.

I durst not ask whatever he'd beheld:
A river Courantyne through Paradise
In countless bents he wound, thus telling lies
By lack of mouth that nought had happened yet

Whereas, in truth, with sensual gesture he
Who had reflected it in secrecy
Tracked picturesquely mute the mottled beast
That in its hazy manners ushered him.

1998, in 21

23. Juni 1994, Divan, Hüben und Drüben I

One-legged Bike Rider

The other day I wrote about memorials;
By now my memory
––ﯾﺎﺩ–– has gone haywire
––No more private history at all––like a
Chin unrecognizable all of a sudden:
Clean-shaven plus a stupor-sagged jaw.
Memory's good at least for giving
Any visage some intelligent expression
Yet it can let you down at any moment; it is
Recalls, no writs, thus can't be taken for granted
It's too smart to undersign or leave material traces.

Even today
Those tiny birds come and go
Alighting on wires to fly off almost instantly.
Brainless pricks. But we're all too sentimental anyway.

The City of Paris as a final destination and as a thoroughfare.

The long first ten years truly squandered in an open-air
_________________________________________madhouse–
Way too many lunatics taking turns to keep in touch with
And still not one overmuch to retain scattered tales.
But what's the sense in reporting anecdota?

Say, the one of that maimed round-the-world tripping biker
Clamped on his heavy cycle with left a leg and right an armpit
_____________________________________________crutch.
To know him meant to fully agree with him, but I never learned
If he succeeded after having made it up to me, a long ride
From overseas just to show me this personal standpoint.

As vivid and unrecountable as a fistful of wet pebbles.

Experiences aren't performances.
To get a performance or narrative effect
Most limbs of a man must remain undetectably
Clad in black bib tights, like in Prague's Magic Lantern.
Simple gobbets of a guy, a guy at times already short of one leg.

Once reduced to a skeleton he'll remain, now an outline
Making sense; to have it rackabones re-coated I can't help:
You'll have to take flesh graft from the stock of your own life.

Facial Virtuosity

Still the best help to have
Your preposterous thing get across is
Facial virtuosity.

A virtuous mien––no pun intended––
You should get it down pat insofar
As you are willing to add of your own.

Faces do confer meanings;
However, first study how to
Not giggle prematurely.

Puny man, caught in an eternal gab fest
Has to choose between demeanor and
Sudden discernment.

There is less brain than shrewdness on earth
But most of us are smitten with
A somewhat mobile countenance.

Savvy or grok
May do for a beast––these
Got so few mimetic muscles.

Life's Cat's Paw

How to profane a sanctuary for good?
By peein' or poopin' or just throwin' up on it?
It's not so easy, mere grossness is merely gross.
Even an untimely statement is of no great avail –
Let alone any overtly pat observation, none of them
Would pull it off, this is all flights of fancy and waste.

There isn't much difference between a basic concept
And a profitable gloss, for instance, about the belly's villi
Which aren't a bit vile by themselves but very helpful indeed.
I forgot where to find it, in Eruvin, Gittin, Bava Metzia or

Même une remarque incongrue n'avancera pas tellement l'affaire ;

Stars Nearby

Do city lights lighten a heart
More kindly than countryside stars?
I don't know, but someone has lit them in purpose
Whereas those far stars must've their own very reasons.

If there's any godhead around, our species are nature, that's for sure.
Our species must be like a bunch of feral animals to him.
He'd watch us as we would observe struggling beasts––
With some sort of pity quickly distracted by the thrill of the drama
_______________________________________________itself
And serenely devoid of any proper commitment, for we both know the

And are aware we should let mother nature do her business alone
And best not horn in on the racket, since we're still part of her.

Le soulever fièrement par les oreilles, puis ramener la pauvre chose à la maison pour le dîner ;

Wood Beamed Ceiling

I abide under a wood-beamed ceiling.
This may seem prestigious
But it's only because I've bared the trusswork
In order to get the height for a mezzanine to crash on.
There's some shortage of regular living space, horizontally
__________________________________speaking–
Simply count the number of square feet on the floor!
Thus I'm subsisting in the vertical and under those beams.
But I've long ceased from being a monkey or scrawny
____________________________________sapling:
I even start growing the pot of the wall-locked chaps my age
And frankly, it's becoming rather farcical.
Quite the same as poetizing.

Poutres apparentes

Statue Razing

i. Wrestling Jocks

Wrestling jocks wrestling
On a natural slope, so
The upper will win
For descent is an arbiter judging
As rashly as time does
Where the subsequent raze any record
For a while, but
This is triumph enough for a lifetime
And passionate statue raising.

Comical fellows with performances
By the yardstick of time
As measured as a
Unique piece of art
And quite surely as hard
To obtain while you're on it.
Despite––or rather thanks to––the slope.

ii. Actual Fervor

Unaroused manhood is like a fish in water.
Aroused, it stiffens into driftwood
A floating log and peril
Easily stuck when encountering another
A hazard typical of these broad streams, though
Not really at its proper place in the current.

***

There was surely a naughty bit of fervor at work
When eyeballs still showed me
And mindballs completed the partial view
And provided that landscape with indwellers––
Beasts, insouciant enough to come down from ages
When peek-a-boo was a more common pastime and
Unawares, beauty would beam through the dazzling leafage.

But now she is balder and fervor alone
May revive such nude-animated paradise
While a child I cut my way through residual lushness
––This town park of a vanished world––
Rambling past rosy limbs, odd or in pairs, but all forsaken
Dew-slick portions of idols reckless somersaults
In better days had eventually scattered into pieces, into
Henceforth incorruptible fragments of truth.

J'ai pris l'habitude de brosser sur ce que la pression seule n'arrive pas à détacher ;

Et non pas quelque chose comme le tiré à quatre épingles du facho organisé ;

Epigrammata XL - The Secrets of Art

The point is not to get a couple of acceptable artwork concocted,
________________________________________________you
Have to get skilled in the mass production of masterpieces.
You can bungle some as long as enough radiance floats in from
______________________________________________beside
But there isn't a secret beside.

To succeed in life you shouldn't engage in such dull step-by-step
__________________________________________procedure;
Life is different, it isn't another piece of art as these connoisseur
_________________________________________guys pretend
It isn't that--since you're now specialized in mass-producing
________________________________________pieces of art--
You'd be overburdened when asked to mass-produce pieces of life
_____________________________________________as well:
There is simply no big secret beside.

That an artist would easily wipe his arse with his art doesn't alter
_________________________________________the quality

Not this artist's one, nor his arse's one, nor his art's one.
But when he thinks that he can act this way with his life, it
_______________________________________positively does.
That's why he is an artist. There are no other secrets besides.

Pour réussir sa vie, il vaut mieux ne pas s'engager dans un tel fastidieux procédé pas à pas ;
Ce serait te surcharger si l'on te demandait également des pièces de vie en masse ;

Epigrammata IXL - By Far the Best

A drug, if simply ineffective
May be less feckless than any other.
I don't talk about placebo, I talk about remedy.

It is extremely painful to sit out an entire existence
The patient oftentimes lacks basic patience.
Good medicine helps pass the wait.

I rub it in as if I got it from Hippocrates in person.
Day by day I keep gazing out of my wheelchair and wonder
Then telling to myself: Yes, consider it so, matter's trundling
_________________________________ is the gift.

That cream operates with the spell of any self-lubrication
But it isn't an innocuous unction, I told you
It is by far the best I have.

Nov XXIX, MMVI

Epigrammata XXXVIII - Clever Mirror Inversion

My right arm hurts, from the shoulder down to the thumb.
I'm a natural lefty, so it shouldn't be that important
But I can do certain things only with my right hand
Even though the other one is way more gifted.

I'm unable to write with that left hand, I was taught so in
___________________________________ school;
The teacher thought I'd preferably train the awkward one.
She was right. Soon enough it went superior to its better
________________________________counterpart.
But I sure pay for it, I am subject to writer's cramps and
_____________________________________stuff.

Simply take a brilliant student and teach him to reflect--
His left will be his right and his right will be his left.
He'll start staring into himself and the upshot may be
__________________________________ stunning:
As to be subject, one has to become one's own object first
He'll be object to the above-mentioned palsies as well.

Nov XXIX, MMVI

XXXVIII Inversion intelligente

Je suis né gaucher, cela ne devrait donc pas être trop grave ;

Epigrammata XXXVII - Hoodwinked, Skedaddling

When I am leaving a movie theater
Walking up that newly formed waiting line
Eyes still glowing from the resplendence of the seen
I at once am a wise man amongst the ignorant
I have lived a life they will be coming to know
I am one death ahead.

But do I plant myself to augustly proclaim truth
Dare I emulate Moses with those Tablets of Screen?
No. For I feel more discomfited than triumphal
Having had this very vision--I rather think myself a gull.
I seek to hide my emotions accelerating
My steps to vanish into the nightliness of the city.

Nov XXVIII, MMVI

XXXVII Dupé, je me casse

Epigrammata XXXVI - Death of a Bullfighter

When destiny played its perilous role and came to grips with
______________________________________him
It got him stuck and could grab the minute part it was long
_________________________________craving for.
He resisted awhile to its grasp in an upheaval to extricate
___________________________________ -himself
But little by little unflagging, tenacious fondling paid off,
___________________________________ perforce
Got more sensitive surface to stroke, teasing out inch by inch
______________________________________ and
He had to let it go and, subdued, took in time his own
________________________________pleasure in it.

A delight, perhaps heftier than destiny's bliss
Since destiny, chiefly overpowered by a lust
His hunky bullfighter features had prompted, somehow
Was less getting its will than it was going balmy.

A pleasure is always a pleasure, there are rather hard proofs;
But who can tell if a joy with that much pain involved
Is mightier or feebler than unadulterated joy
Or sheer morally tenable joy?

Nov XXVII, MMVI

Epigrammata XXXV - More Than I Can Use

Age is an extender as well as a filth breeder;
The crumples it allows harbor all kinds of germs.

Leptospira interrogans for instance might drip off any tight
_________________ ____________________thigh
But will prosper in the dimples of unquestionable cellulite.
The same with Candidatus melancholiae.

The cockles of my heart are swollen by the time
I've passed accreting into those.
And this is the result of it.

Please grant me a little extra time, I possibly
Can once again tauten that gained surface
Into one over life-sized experience.
The science of a dotard.

Nov XXVI, MMVI

Epigrammata XXXIV - Nipples Require More Clearance When Erect

You have my word, I take it well
Conceding that a fit of spell
Can pull an oyster off her shell
To shelter in another's hell:

But had you ever been that true
Or had you ever gone that far
I wouldn't have joined you where you are.

If someone hops from stately rack
Into his tin god's ratty shack
Both mussels, each in one's own stack
Will instantly feel crammed and pack.

But had you ever been that true
Or had you ever gone that far
I'd have you turfed from where you are.

Nov XXVI, MMVI

XXXIV Dressé, le téton réclame davantage d'écart

Je te promets, rien ne m'alarme
Autant qu'un simple appel au charme
Qui tire l'huître de sa coque
Pour investir tel autre schnock.

Mais toi, fidèle parmi toutes
Si tu étais allée si loin –
Je ne t'aurais jamais rejoint !

Si quelqu'un troque, épris, sa piaule
Pour le taudis de son idole
Chacun des deux, moule en son tas
Vivra plus encore à l'étroit.

Mais toi, fidèle parmi toutes
Si tu étais allée si loin –
Je l'aurais tôt vidé, mon coin !

Epigrammata XXXIII - The Laws of Adumbration

I sat in polite company and thought:
Here I am--buried alive. All these are stone dead.
I can tell them whatever stories, they constantly nod or
__________________ ________________shrug.

Subdued colors and stifled laughter
Do not confirm that the culprit's conked out
Meaningless shifts to blot out the time after
Are more a sign that he got off this bout.

I looked around once again and was pleased.

If you are eager to learn the taste of blood, I told to myself
You simply got to prick one of your fingers and suck it out.
You don't have to cut off a hand and ram the stump into

N'indiquent pas que le quidam ait trépassé ;

Les noms dynastiques sont des concepts mentaux qui aident à l'Orientation ;
